Japanese Leaders Laud Khmer New Year Celebrations in Osaka for Strengthening Cultural Ties

Phnom Penh, April 10, 2024: Japanese political and local government leaders have extended warm congratulations on the Khmer New Year celebrations held in Osaka on April 7, 2024. Senators from Japan's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), along with governors and mayors of Osaka, commended the event for showcasing the depth and beauty of Khmer culture and strengthening the bonds between Japan and Cambodia.

Senator Katayama Satsuki, chair of the Financial Research Commission and vice-chair of the Taxation Research Commission of the LDP, highlighted the event's contribution to cultural exchange and the deepening of bilateral friendship. She remarked on the Khmer Sankranti's demonstration of Cambodia's rich cultural heritage, which is admired worldwide.

Osaka's Governor, Yoshimura Hirofumi, shared his enthusiasm for hosting the inaugural Khmer Sankranti event in the region. He noted that the inclusion of culinary delights, concerts, and traditional dances would further cement friendly relations between Osaka and Cambodia.

Mayor Yokoyama Hideyuki of Osaka expressed that the 2024 Khmer Sankranti event introduced the traditions of Khmer New Year, including culture, folk games, and authentic Khmer cuisine, to the people of Osaka. He praised the event for significantly enhancing cultural cooperation between Japan and Cambodia, and thanked the Royal Government of Cambodia for selecting Osaka as the venue for this meaningful celebration.

The "Khmer Sanctuary in Japan" event, held at Osaka Castle, was organized by the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training in cooperation with the Embassy of the Kingdom of Cambodia in Japan, the ESEA team, and the Cambodian Friends Association. Chaired by Minister Heng Sour, the celebration was attended by Nakano Hiromasa, a member of Japan's National Assembly, along with governors and mayors from the region, members of the Cambodian community, students, interns, workers, and over 10,000 national and international guests.

The festivities included religious ceremonies, food offerings to monks following Khmer Buddhist traditions, and booths featuring Khmer cuisine and products, such as Ansam cakes and Khmer pepper cakes. Traditional games like box throwing, towel pulling, and towel hiding contributed to a festive and joyful atmosphere.

In addition to Osaka, the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training hosted similar New Year Sankranti events across 10 other locations in Japan, spreading the joy and traditions of Khmer culture far and wide.
